Check the Status of the Registration Number

The motor vehicle laws in the US make it mandatory that all cars which have been involved in a serious accident, fire or flood and are deemed irreparable by the insurer company be issued a branding status.

For example if the insurance company determines that the cost of repairing the vehicle is more than the market value, the cars status would be salvage or irreparable.

This branding is very helpful for a person wanting to buy these cars. A typical scenario is if an unscrupulous dealer puts out an advertisement for “Salvage Cars for Sale “. By checking the registration number of the vehicle, you will know that this vehicle is actually under an “Irreparable “status. This means that the dealer is fraudulently trying to sell you a car which could be a potential death trap.

This system is also a deterrent against buying stolen cars. One modus operandi used by car thieves is to use the vehicle identification number of a smashed car and put it in a stolen car.
